BTS’s Jin Revealed How Writing Music About His Dark Times Helped Him Through Depression

“Now and then I feel the need to talk about what’s inside me.”

BTS‘s Jin is known for his bright and positive image, constantly making ARMYs laugh with his light-hearted attitude and sense of humor. However, he recently delved more into his dark side in an interview with Weverse Magazine to reveal there’s more to him than what he shows to fans.

Jin released “Abyss” on his birthday in 2020, a song discussing his struggles with burnout and feeling depressed. He shared that releasing the song allowed him to voice his feelings.

I felt a kind of relief. I want my fans to picture me as being happy and I don’t actually want them to know that I feel that way, but now and then I feel the need to talk about what’s inside me.

Even though he’s reluctant to show these sides of himself to the public, it gave him a sense of relief to be honest with fans and write his emotions clearly.

It’s been a few years since I expressed it in a song or explained anything about it so I feel a tiny bit relieved.

Specifically, Jin discussed how the lines “I want to know more about you today” and “I hold my breath and enter my ocean” overlap and represent him meeting himself during a dark time he was going through.

Even I don’t know myself very well, and I was also depressed at the time, and that’s how I chose to face that part of myself. I never had a chance to meet myself, and I just feel like I was submerged in my own ocean and came back up to walk on the beach.
