In a new promotional video for Mnet‘s upcoming survival show Girls Planet 999, mentors Sunmi and Girls’ Generation‘s Tiffany discovered a cool connection between them.
Many of today’s K-Pop fans know Sunmi as the talented ABYSS Company soloist behind hits like “Tail” and “Gashina,” but “OG” fandoms know she originally debuted as part of the second-generation JYP Entertainment group Wonder Girls. However, her history in the “Big 3” goes back even further than that—before she joined JYP Entertainment, she also auditioned for SM Entertainment.
Sunmi previously explained a little of her SM Entertainment audition story on KBS2‘s Come Back Home last month, where she revealed that she tried out for the agency when she was younger. Talking to Tiffany in Mnet’s “First Meeting of Masters” video for Girls Planet 999, Sunmi went on to share a little more about the experience—and even found a fated connection with Tiffany herself.
“My first audition was when I was grade five,” said Sunmi, revealing that she tried out as part of SM Entertainment’s legendary “Saturday Audition.” Less than ten idols have ever passed this open audition, including aespa‘s Giselle, Red Velvet‘s Seulgi and Yeri, and NCT‘s Jungwoo and Haechan.
Sunmi continued, telling Tiffany that as she was standing in line, the casting manager picked her specifically out of the crowd—but it wasn’t just any agent. “She’s the one who cast me,” Tiffany told a shocked Sunmi.
What an awesome coincidence for the Girls Planet 999 mentors; even the video’s editors called it “fate.” Ultimately, Sunmi ended up at JYP Entertainment after an SM Entertainment employee who was switching companies scouted her during the audition process. But either way, the casting manager in question certainly had an eye for talent.
